Monte Carlo characterization of photoneutrons in the radiation therapy with high energy photons: a Comparison between simplified and full Monte Carlo models
Authors
Abstract:
Background: The characteristics of secondary neutrons in a high energy radiation therapy room were studied using the MCNPX Monte Carlo (MC) code. Materials and Methods: Two MC models including a model with full description of head components and a simplified model used in previous studies were implemented for MC simulations. Results: Results showed 4-53% difference between full and with the simplified model in the neutron fluence calculation. Additionally, in full MC model, increase in the field size decreased the neutron fluence but for simplified model, increase in the field size led to increase in neutron fluence. In calculating the neutron and capture gamma ray dose equivalent, simplified model overestimated (9-47%) and (20-61%) respectively in comparison to the full simulated model. However, a close agreement was seen between two models, for field size of 10×10 cm2. Conclusion: for MC modeling of photoneutrons and capture gamma in radiotherapy rooms, the detailed modeling of linac head instead of simplified model is recommended. Iran. J. Radiat. full textA Monte Carlo simulation and dosimetric verification of physical wedges used in radiation therapy
Background: The presence of a wedge filter in the beam trajectory can modify the beam quality and cause some changes in the dosimetry parameters which are usually difficult to be measured directly and accurately. Material and Methods: In this study the MCNP-4C Monte Carlo code was used to simulate the 9 MV photon beam generated by a linear accelerator. Upon getting a good agreement bet...
full textCharacterization of low, medium and high energy collimators for common isotopes in nuclear medicine: A Monte Carlo study
Introduction:In an ideal parallel-hole collimator, thickness of septal material should be sufficient to stop more than 95% of incident photons. However, some photons pass the septa without interaction or experience scattering before they reach the detector. In this study, we determined different contribution of collimator responses consist of geometrical response, septal penetr...

Introduction: An accurate and fast radiation dose calculation is essential for successful radiation radiotherapy. The aim of this study was to implement a new graphic processing unit (GPU) based radiation therapy treatment planning for accurate and fast dose calculation in radiotherapy centers. Materials and Methods: A program was written for parallel runnin...
full textAssessment of The Relation Between Energy Of Primary Protons And Undesired Neutron Dose During Proton Therapy By Monte Carlo Method
Introduction: High-energy beams of protons offer significant advantages for the treatment of deepseated local tumors. Their physical depth-dose distribution in tissue is characterized by a small entrance dose and a distinct maximum -Bragg peak- near the end of range with a sharp fall-off at the distal edge. Alongside its advantages there are some point that they need to meticul...
